Next Fall by Geoffrey Nauffts AUDITIONS
Auditions are now called for the Australian Premiere of NEXT FALL by Geoffrey Nauffts scheduled to play at the King Street Theatre Newtown from 12th October to 6th November 2016.

Next Fall premiered Off Broadway in 2009 before being transferred to Broadway in Feb 2010. It was nominated for the Tony Award for Best Play that same year.

The play is about two gay men in a committed relationship with a twist, with one, Luke, being devoutly religious and the other, Adam, an atheist. The play revolves around their five-year relationship and how they make it work despite their differences. However, when an accident changes everything, Adam must turn to Luke's family for support and answers.

For our production, we want to look at the effect of the conflict of faith and love and that of hope and self loathing. Humour gets the best of us through terrible situations and humour is what brings the fascinating, albeit completely contrasting characters of 'Next Fall' together.

The timing of the piece is apt, even though the play could have a tendency be easily dated, the recent events in Australia where one half of a legally married gay couple died in South Australia had his death certificate listed as 'never married', shows the relevance of the work in Australia today.

'Next Fall' is a heavily dialogue driven piece, the text speaks for itself and the quality of the production will be most seen in the character development, the journeys of all the characters and the utter heartfullness of not only the characters' grief in the present scenes, but the love and struggle in Adam and Luke's relationship.

Gay love stories, even those with religious confliction, have been told ad nauseam and the challenge with this piece is to provide a different, relevant interpretation. What makes this story relevant now are the current laws relating to marriage equality and the ramifications of partners' rights in situations like this. 'Next Fall', whilst attractive to a queer audience, would be by no means a play which excludes the mainstream. Instead, our production would highlight the similarities in all relationships and the utter grief and coping mechanisms families, friends and partners go through in times of trouble like this.

In the end, the production should, and must, be a humorous romp through grief, showing a relatable couple going through a journey of self awareness, acceptance and a heartfelt love story.

We are looking for a committed cast to bring the story to life.

Please get in touch with more questions. If you would be interested in auditioning for the roles, please see the descriptions listed below, submit your interest and an audition piece, along with a script, will be sent to you.

If you would like to present any other excerpts from the script, please bring them as well. This isn’t necessary, however, if you feel you’d like to show anything else from the script, in addition to the pieces sent, we’d welcome that.
